Thang Long Water Puppet Troupe (Vietnam)

A legendary folk art set against the spectacular backdrop of Victoria Harbour

Charming and uplifting, sincere and warm

"As exhilarating as it is historic, a rare enchanting treat, so magical at times you forgot to be mystified" - San Francisco Examiner

Founded in 1969, Hanoi's Thang Long Water Puppet Troupe is one of the most renowned performing arts groups in Vietnam. It has successfully toured the world, and received the silver and gold prizes at the Hanoi International Puppetry Festival in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

A waist-deep pool will be built in front of the Cultural Centre Piazza exclusively for this performance. Here, skilful puppeteers will stand to conjure up their tales of traditional Vietnamese life. As the puppets engage in farming, bullfighting, frog hunting, water play and parades, a delightful series of scenes unfold accompanied by live music and Vietnamese quan ho folk songs, which has been included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In this puppet show, folktales and legends are mixed with everyday vignettes, creating a humorous and engaging characterisation of Vietnamese rural life, and a captivating counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. A rare outdoor theatrical experience that appeals to young audiences and adults alike, this lively production offers a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together.
