Innovative jazz and classical sounds spark sensuous sonic cityscape

Explore the unique charm of Hong Kong on a cinematic musical journey filled with intrigue! Here, new scores written collaboratively by jazz guitarist Teriver Cheung and composer Fung Lam, both Hongkongers, meld with evocative imagery to draw up four different “chapters” of this singular metropolis in the course of a virtual day: its cosmopolitan cityscape; fast-paced lifestyle; avenues for spiritual retreat; and colourful heritage and culture.

The refreshing jazz-classical cross-over is a first-time partnership for Cheung and Lam. Fast-rising on the world music map, Cheung has established himself as a stand-out guitarist on the international jazz scene, while Lam is the youngest Chinese composer to be commissioned by the BBC. They are joined by French artist Jean-Michel Pilc, described by The Washington Post as a “musical genius”, and his New York-based jazz trio, along with Macau-born saxophone sensation Timothy Sun, and top chamber players from the Hong Kong Contemporary Music Group. The result is an amazing tapestry of original music and visuals weaving a lasting impression of Hong Kong by and for the next generation.

Improvisation vs Composition

In Hong Kong Episodes, guitarist/composer Teriver Cheung, composer Fung Lam and pianist Jean-Michel Pilc explore the connections and disparities between free-style jazz and classical music. How do jazz musicians improvise on formally composed works? Or develop such free-flowing melodic lines? And how do composers create room for their works to be reinterpreted? The three artists share their views on composing music and the exhilaration of improvisation, illustrated by selected works from the concert.
